Your voice was cloned with AI: what to do

A few seconds of audio are now enough to imitate a voice. If yours is being used in a video, a voice message or a phone call, here is what to do.

If someone got a call “from you”

  • Warn your family that your voice can be imitated, and that no urgent request for money “from you” should be acted on without checking.
  • Agree on a family safe word to ask for if a call seems suspicious.
  • If money was sent, call the bank immediately and report it to the police: this is fraud. In the US you can also report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

Keep evidence

  1. Copy the exact address (URL) of every page, post or account involved.
  2. Take a screenshot showing the content, the address and, if possible, the date. Do not download or share the content itself.
  3. Note who posted it: account name, handle, date posted, any useful comments.
  4. Keep any messages if someone contacted you (threats, demands for money). Do not delete them.

Getting content with your voice removed

  1. Report the video or audio on the platform, as manipulated media or impersonation.
  2. Report the account that posted it.
  3. Ask Google to delist it if it shows up in searches for your name.
  4. Limit the sources: consider restricting access to videos where your voice can be heard at length.

What the law says

The law is catching up fast. In the EU, the AI Act requires deepfake audio to be disclosed as AI-generated. In the US, several states protect a person's voice under right of publicity laws, and Tennessee's ELVIS Act (2024) explicitly covers AI voice imitation. In France, the Criminal Code covers AI content reproducing a person's “image or words” without consent.

Reporting to the police is your right, and it is the only way to have the person behind it identified and prosecuted. It is not required to get content taken down. A lawyer in your country can tell you whether it makes sense in your case, and our evidence file can be attached to your report.

General information, not legal advice. Laws differ from country to country: for advice on your situation, talk to a lawyer where you live.

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell if my voice has been cloned?
Often, family or friends mention a strange call or video. You can also search your name regularly on video and audio platforms.
Can you get back money lost to a voice scam?
No, that is not what we do: contact your bank as soon as possible and get advice from a lawyer. We can, however, get content using your voice taken down.
An ad is using my voice. What should I do?
See our scam ad guide: the steps are the same.
